Wearable Sculpture/Mask
For my 3D Foundation Class I was tasked with crafting a wearable sculpture/mask measuring 3 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Alongside this, I had to develop a celebratory ritual lasting 5 minutes, all while documenting myself wearing the sculpture. Drawing from my deep passion for music, I decided to direct my creative energies towards a project closely tied to this expressive art form. I carefully selected "Fever" by the Black Keys, one of my favorite songs, and delved into its meaning and background. Through my research, I uncovered its theme of overcoming addiction. Inspired by this message, I set out to honor the song through the creation of a music video.
As I immersed myself in the song, I envisioned an alien or an individual who experiences a sense of alienation from society due to their personal struggles with addiction. To bring this vision to life in my sculpture, I meticulously fashioned a 3-foot-tall alien head using wire and paper mache. Paying homage to the album cover and capturing the song's emotive qualities, I painted tears in shades of blue and pink, streaming down the alien's cheeks. To symbolize the weight of addiction, I incorporated bricks on the left shoulder of the sculpture, crafted from repurposed painted styrofoam. Attached to the right side of the alien's head, I added clouds to represent a sense of being lost in one's thoughts. These clouds were crafted using pillow stuffing and enhanced with flashing LED lights, creating the illusion of a thunderstorm brewing within. Furthermore, I affixed an empty bottle of alcohol to symbolize the struggles associated with addiction.
By merging my artistic interpretation with the transformative power of "Fever," I aimed to convey a poignant narrative through my sculpture and video. This project allowed me to explore the profound emotions and personal growth entwined within the song's lyrics, ultimately celebrating the triumph over addiction.
